每個棋子的形式都受到功能的約束，沒有任何過份突出的特徵影響設計的整體性，也使得棋子與棋子之間、棋子與棋盤之間，形成嚴謹而沈穩的對稱美感，力求簡潔也成為包浩斯西洋棋作為實用藝術的最佳證據，更體現了絕佳的當代感。

西洋棋有千年以上的歷史，從古至今，西洋棋一直以軍事意象存在著，然而當時距離第一次世界大戰不過約莫五年的時間，Josef Hartwig藉著消除西洋棋的軍事化造型，在有意無意之間留下了時代的印記與對和平的嚮往。
